LGBTQ+ Support
Honolulu, Hilo and Hawaii Telehealth
You should not have to explain yourself to your therapist. You should not have to wonder, in the first session, whether they get it. You should not have to educate the person you are paying to help you.
At Hoʻohana Counseling, our providers are not just LGBTQ+ friendly. We have specialized training and experience in the specific needs of our community, and we are here for whoever you are and wherever you are on your path.
Two things almost nobody talks about
The first: you can be terrified of coming out even when you know your family will be fine. The fear does not need a hostile family to exist. It comes from years of a world telling you what is normal, and it does not switch off just because the people you love are kind. If that is you, you are not being irrational. You are carrying something real, and we can help you set it down.
The second: you can come out and be met with silence or even rejection. Your parents heard you, and then they never mentioned it again, and now it is six months later and you do not know how to bring it up or whether you are allowed to. That is its own kind of loss, and it deserves its own kind of care.
What we help with
Questioning your identity, without pressure to land anywhere
Coming out, and what to have in place before you do
Being out and dealing with the family, work, or church that has not caught up
Gender dysphoria and transition, including working alongside your medical providers if you are considering or receiving hormone therapy
The anxiety, depression, and exhaustion of being on guard all the time
Relationships, dating, and building a family
Family counseling, so the people who love you can learn how to show it
In Hawaiʻi
These islands have a long history of understanding that gender and love do not fit in two boxes. That does not mean every family, every church, or every workplace has kept up. If you are the only one you know, on your island, in your town, in your family, you are not the only one, and you do not have to drive to Honolulu to find someone who understands. We see people across the state by telehealth.
What we do
We provide a place where your identity is not the problem to be solved. Whatever you bring, anxiety, grief, a relationship, a decision, your identity is simply part of who walks in the door, and it is met with respect. Every person's path is different, and we follow yours.
