Depression and Anxiety Therapy

Honolulu, Hilo and Hawaii Telehealth

You cannot get out of bed. Or you can, but everything after that feels like too much work. And underneath the heaviness there is a hum of worry that never quite shuts off.

If that is you, nothing is wrong with you. Depression and anxiety show up together far more often than they show up alone. The tiredness and the racing thoughts feed each other. You lie awake worrying, so you are exhausted, so the smallest task is a mountain, so you worry about the things you did not do.

Is this normal? Yes. It is also treatable, and the fact that you are reading this means part of you already knows that.

What is actually happening

Depression is not only sadness. Most people who come to us for it describe something closer to numbness, or a heaviness in the body that no amount of sleep touches. Motivation does not come first and action follow. It is the other way round. That is why "just get up and do something" has never worked for you, and it is why it is not your fault that it has not.

Anxiety is the other side. Your body is bracing for something. Chest tight, stomach off, thoughts looping through worst cases. Sometimes there is a clear worry. Often there is not, and that makes it worse, because you cannot argue with a fear that has no name.

Why we see so much of this in Hawaiʻi

Only about 15 percent of adults in Hawaiʻi got any mental health treatment last year. That is the lowest rate of any state in the country. It is not because people here struggle less. It is because there are not enough of us, the distances are real, and a lot of local families were raised to carry things quietly and keep going.

If you have been keeping going for a long time, we understand that. We also know it has a cost, and you do not have to pay it alone.

What we do

We start by listening. Not a checklist, a conversation about what your days actually look like right now and what has changed. From there we work together on the two things that move first: the thinking patterns that keep the worry running, and the small, concrete actions that start to bring your life back. Every counselor on our team brings their own training and approach, and we adjust to what works for you rather than fitting you to a method.

Some people want to understand where this came from. Some just want to feel like themselves again. Both are good reasons to be here.
