Your fifteen year old has not really come out of her room in weeks. Your sons cannot be in the same space without a fight. Or the house is quiet, and that is worse, because everyone is walking on eggshells and nobody will say what about.
Something has gone wrong between you. Not in one person. Between you. And the thing about between is that no one person can fix it alone.
What family counseling is
It is the whole family, or the part of it that is stuck, in one room with someone whose job is to help you hear each other. Not to take sides. Not to decide who is right. To help the teenager say what they cannot say to your face, and help you hear it without getting defensive, and help everyone find a way through that does not require somebody to lose.
It is different from parenting support, which is for the parents and other adults without the child in the room, and different from individual therapy for your child. When the problem lives in how the family works together, this is when family counseling is needed.
Why families here wait
In Hawaiʻi, family is everything, and that cuts both ways. It means there is a lot of love to work with. It also means there is a lot of pressure to keep problems inside the house, to not shame the family, to handle it ourselves. By the time most families call us, things have been hard for a long time.
You do not have to wait that long. Coming in is not a failure of the family. It is the family deciding it is worth the work.
What we do
We meet with everyone together, and sometimes in smaller groups, depending on what will help. We look at the patterns, the arguments that always go the same way, the roles everyone has fallen into, the thing nobody talks about. Then we work on changing them, in the room, with everyone present. Our counselors include licensed marriage and family therapists and clinicians with years of experience working with children, teenagers, and parents.
